The Art of Raising a Puppy

by: The Monks of New Skete
I ordered this book upon the advice of our breeder when the puppies were about 2 weeks old. No one is really thinking about serious training when there is still another 6-8 weeks before you receive your newest family member. This book was wonderful. The authors used real dogs and puppies as examples to explain their training techniques. It was well written and easy to understand. Even though we had raised puppies in the past, it had been some time since we'd had a new pup. The content was extremely informative and insightful as to what a dog may be thinking or experiencing.

The Pigeon Wants a Puppy

by: Mo Willems
I love the pigeon books. Maybe they don't teach any specific values or educational concepts, but boy my children sure get a kick out of listening to me read them. My children love puppies & dogs so they think this one is funny. In the end, pigeon decides dogs are too big & scary & wants a walrus instead. They just love that silly pigeon. My son is in stitches when he hears my vocal rendition of pigeon's rants. In my head, pigeon's voice is kind of like the comedian Gilbert Godfrey's (sp?).

Saving Gracie: How One Dog Escaped the Shadowy World of American Puppy Mills

by: Carol Bradley
Well, I'm pretty sure she is.

I live in Central PA, surrounded by many of the puppy mills discussed in this book. I've passed the billboards showing the inside of a dishwasher, telling us that a dog is allowed to live in a crate this size for their entire life. Linda Jackson, Gracie's owner, and I have been friends for many years.

But I have to admit, I've turned a blind eye to the horrific problem of puppy mills.

Like many of you, I read the stories, heard the news reports and could not believe that this horrible treatment of animals was going on so prolifically in my state.

My Smart Puppy: Fun, Effective, and Easy Puppy Training (Book & 60min DVD)

by: Brian Kilcommons, Sarah Wilson
This was a good informative book about dogs and their nature. This was my first book, since I was getting a dog for the first time, and I must say I have learned a lot from this book and it prepared before getting my first dog.
